Johnson & Johnson has customarily been a front leader in various aspects of their operations, whether it may be on product research, marketing, or financial standing. It now appears that it has maintained this hold even in the number of vaginal mesh lawsuits filed by women injured as a result of using surgical mesh for the repair of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
Latest count in the West Virginia multidistrict litigation (MDL) lists 11,113 pending vaginal mesh lawsuits against Ethicon, the subsidiary of J&J. When the claims filed in New Jersey and other state courts are included, the number is expected to increase further. This may give them the distinction of having the most number of vaginal mesh lawsuits among the 30 or more companies facing mesh litigations.
Thousands of women have alleged to have been injured as a result of using the various mesh products marketed by Ethicon, Inc. Whether it was for the repair of POP or SUI, patients claim that they experienced severe complications ranging from mesh erosion, shrinkage, chronic pain, organ perforation, dyspareunia and infections which have led to permanent injuries requiring multiple surgeries including mesh removal.
